In assessing Miami’s new head coach, Jeff Hafley, I can offer the following analysis of him. At first, I was underwhelmed by the hire as I felt that his defenses as a potential defensive mastermind head coach were always good but nothing special. During the 2025 season Hafley’s defense finished 11th in points per game allowed, 12th in yards per game allowed, with Pro Football Focus grading it as the 14th best defense in the sport, just slightly above average by any stretch. During the 2024 season, Hafley’s defense finished 6th in both points and yards per game allowed with Pro Football Focus grading it as the 12th best defense in the sport. However, if you look deeper than just the final metrics of where his defense finished each season, he was a strong hire.
The two premier defensive head coaches in the NFL today are DeMeco Ryans of the Texans and Mike Macdonald of the Seahawks. The Dolphins hired Hafley in hopes that he can be that caliber of defensive head coach for Miami. In comparing Hafley to both Ryans and Macdonald, I can offer the following. In year 1 as an NFL defensive coordinator Hafley’s defense was right on par with both Ryans and Macdonald in their first years as defensive coordinators as well. Hafley’s defense in year 1 as an NFL defensive coordinator ranked 6th in both points and yards allowed, adding up to 12. Macdonald’s defense in year 1 as an NFL defensive coordinator ranked 3rd and 9th in each department respectively, adding up to 12. DeMeco Ryans’ defense in year 1 as an NFL defensive coordinator ranked 10th in points per game allowed and 3rd in yards per game allowed, adding up to 13. So, after 1 season as an NFL defensive coordinator, Hafley was right on the same track as both Ryans and Macdonald.
However, in year 2 as an NFL defensive coordinator, both MacDonald and Ryans’ defenses each led the league in points allowed, while Hafley’s defense in year 2 as an NFL defensive coordinator did not even finish in the top ten in that department. However, the Packers’ defense under Hafley in year 2 saw a big drop off in the tail end of the season once superstar defender Micah Parsons suffered a season ending injury, allowing 34 points to the Broncos and 41 points to the Ravens down the stretch. Although Hafley deserves culpability for such a noticeable drop with the loss of Parsons, the defense likely would have finished higher in terms of final metrics if Parsons did not go down. Additionally, both the Ravens’ and 49ers’ offenses on the opposite side of the ball to Macdonald and Ryans respectively in year 2 as NFL defensive coordinators were among the league’s best. Whereas the Packers offense on the opposite side of Hafley’s defense was closer to average. Thus, putting Hafley’s defense in more compromising situations with regularity.
After the first two games of the 2025 season, I was blown away by the Packers’ defense and Green Bay was the best team in the NFL to many because of said defense. Hafley at that point immediately became likely the hottest head coaching candidate on the market, especially after the remarkable year 1 he had which was exactly on par with the year 1s that Macdonald and Ryans had as defensive coordinators. Green Bay’s defense after the first two weeks this past season I felt was on pace to be the next great NFL defense such as the Legion of Boom Seahawks. Hafley’s defense held a historically great Lions’ offense from the previous season to only 13 points in week 1. With that same Lions’ offense still finishing as a top 5 offense during the 2025 season. In week 2, Hafley’s defense held an elite Commanders’ offense from the previous season with the generationally gifted Jayden Daniels at QB to only 18 points.
The Green Bay defense the rest of the season looked very strong with regularity although having some slip ups. Green Bay’s defense under Hafley, the rest of the 2025 season had three games that should be viewed as outliers. Green Bay’s defense under Hafley surrendered 40 points to the Cowboys early in the season. However, Dallas was one of the best offenses in the sport last year and it was an early season game on the road. Even Seattle’s #1 scoring defense led by Mike Macdonald during this past season gave up 38 points to the Buccaneers at home. The remaining two outlier games for Green Bay’s defense this past season was giving up 34 points to the Broncos and 41 points to the Ravens after superstar defender Micah Parsons suffered a season ending injury. Although Hafley deserves culpability for the drop off that the team saw on the defensive side of things after Parsons went down, the subpar performances down the stretch are understandable as the team struggled to adjust.
Outside of weeks 1 and 2 in 2025 where Green Bay’s defense felt like the best in the sport, the Packers’ defense under Hafley put together a string of noteworthy defensive performances the rest of the season. Holding the Lions’ explosive offense in check again to less than 25 points, holding the Bears to 21 points or less in regulation twice, holding the Vikings to under 20 once and under 10 another time, holding the Eagles to only 10 points, while also holding the Bengals, Browns, Panthers, and Giants to 20 or less. Although the Packers’ defense under Hafley did not feel necessarily dominant after their dominant week 1 and 2 performances, it was consistently very good and could be argued as dominant.
After 1 year as an NFL defensive coordinator, Jeff Hafley was essentially on the exact same trajectory that both Mike Macdonald and DeMeco Ryans were on after their first years as defensive coordinators in the NFL. With Macdonald and Ryans being the two premier defensive head coaches in the sport as of now. Hafley’s defense in the postseason as a rookie defensive coordinator also performed at a remarkable level as well. The eventual Super Bowl champion Eagles that season had an electric high-flying offense. Philadelphia put up over 50 points on offense vs the Commanders in the NFC Championship Game. Then proceeded to put up over 30 points on the Chiefs in the Super Bowl as well. Defensive minded head coach Dan Quinn of the Commanders and Chiefs’ defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo are two of the greatest defensive minds in league history and neither could slow down the Eagles in the playoffs. However, when that same Eagles’ offense played Jeff Halfey’s Packers’ defense in the wild card round, they were neutralized scoring only 22 points. Jeff Hafley was very qualified for this head coaching position and was a strong hire by the Dolphins. However, I am reluctant to say he was a very strong hire as final metrics are the biggest indicator of success. While the final metrics of Jeff Hafley’s Packers’ defense in year 2 on the job was slightly above average at best. Especially, when compared to Ryans and Macdonald who coordinated the league’s top scoring defense in each of their second seasons as defensive coordinators.
